Nnamdi Kanu defends himself in court as lawyers withdraw
Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), appeared today at the Federal High Court, Abuja to open his defence in the terrorism case filed by the federal government.
During the session, his senior legal team—including lead counsel Kanu Agabi, SAN, and other Senior Advocates—announced their withdrawal from the case. They stated that Kanu had opted to take over the conduct of his defence.
Kanu confirmed in court that he would represent himself for the time being, declining the court’s offer of assigning new lawyers.
He then began orally challenging the jurisdiction of the court to try him, although the judge insisted the proceedings go forward.
Kanu also informed the court that he intends to call 23 witnesses, divided into “ordinary but material” and “vital and compellable” witnesses under Section 232 of the Evidence Act. Among those he cited are prominent figures such as Theophilus Danjuma (rtd), Tukur Buratai (rtd), governors Babajide Sanwo‑Olu and Hope Uzodinma, and various former ministers and intelligence officials.
The court adjourned the case until Friday, October 24, 2025 to allow Kanu to properly open his defence.
