Defections don't determine election results
A national leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dr. Ibrahim Mani, has asserted that voter defections alone cannot determine the outcome of elections. Addressing concerns about continual defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC), he insisted that such shifts do not automatically translate into success at the ballot box.
Mani explained the ADC’s confidence despite losing members to other parties: he believes that electoral victory requires more than numbers—it demands effective organisation, grassroots mobilisation and strong policy appeal. He claimed the APC’s influx of defectors “does not intimidate” the ADC and maintained that the party will contest upcoming elections with conviction.
He further emphasised that while defections are a feature of Nigeria’s political scene, they should not overshadow the significance of credible nomination processes, voter education and public trust. For Mani, parties must focus on building lasting relationships with voters and communities rather than relying solely on headline-grabbing defections.
